Anti-Defamation League: Worse than the defamation?
I ran into this while surfing at CNN today: http://www.catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1326 Now, as a Christian, I'm obviously not in agreement with what Cathy Griffin is supposed to have said. But it seems to me that about the last thing that Christianity needs is the kind of militant cheerleader we have in Bill Donohue. Last I checked, Christians were a majority group in this country. If we can't turn the other cheek when a militant atheist and angry lesbian says something we don't agree with, we need to examine our beliefs and see if we really, in our hearts, accept Christ's teachings.
Far better would be to lead by example, like the people who run the homeless shelters, food pantries and provide relief for disaster victims. Shouting in the public forum doesn't win people over to our beliefs. It shows the world that we're brittle and sensitive, that we are uncertain in our beliefs and need to shout down anyone who challenges them.
Maybe that's the way that Mr. Donohue's faith moves him: anything that speaks against it is a threat to that faith and weakens it. It's not the way my faith came to me. For me, it's something internal, a part of my heart. Burn the churches, ban public prayer, turn the priests out into the street: I'm still a Christian. I will still struggle through my whole life to live according to His teachings. And in the end, because I am mortal flesh, I will fall short of the goal.

Good point!
I'm sure Cathy Griffin was trying to be funny, maybe Donahue could have a little compassion for her failure!
